Montblanc Victor Hugo 1831 Writers Edition 2020 Rollerball (L.E.
Victor Marie Hugo (1802 – 1885) was a French novelist, poet and dramatist of the Romantic movement. He is considered to be one of the greatest and best-known French writers. He is famous for his works Les Misérables (1862) and Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame) (1831). In 1841 Hugo was elected to the Académie française, solidifying his position in the world of French arts and letters. Although best known for his novels, Victor Hugo also produced numerous pieces of poetry such as Les Contemplations (The Contemplations) and La Légende des siècles (The Legend of the Ages), and also made more than 4,000 drawings in his lifetime.

The Montblanc Victor Hugo Writers Edition 1831 edition has been largely influenced by the novels of Victor Hugo and the architecture of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. The cap and barrel feature Gothic arches, while the cap is decorated with a rose window in tribute to the Rose of Our Lady, the cathedral's most famous window. The underlying red color is a reference to the prison uniform of Victor Hugo's character Jean Valjean. The end of the bell-shaped clip is reminiscent to Quasimodo and the famous bells of Notre-Dame. The top of the Montblanc Limited Edition 1831 Victor Hugo pen is engraved with a trefoil arch, the architectural symbol of Notre-Dame.

The ring on top of the barrel is a reference to the way Quasimodo was chained to a pillar on the square in front of the cathedral. The bottom part is painted yellow and refers to the passport that Jean Valjean received when he left prison. The top of the cap is engraved with a a quote “Chaque homme dans sa nuit s’en va vers sa lumière” from Hugo's Les Contemplations, a metaphor evoking the idea of redemption. The top of the cap is crowned with the Montblanc mother-of-pearl emblem. In honour of the year of publication of the novel Notre-Dame de Paris (1831), this edition is limited to 1,831 pieces.
